More than 55 years after its first delivery, the STACK BED is as relevant today as ever. Amidst the challenge of limited living space, it showcases the possibility of creating a delightful living environment even within a compact area. The simple idea: whenever an additional sleeping option is needed, the space-saving STACK BED is immediately available. It's no wonder that it has been repeatedly honored with design awards, most recently with the prestigious German Design Award 2019 in the Design Classics and Re-editions category.

The history of the STACK BED

After completing his apprenticeship as a carpenter and studying interior architecture at the then Muthesius School of Applied Arts in Kiel, Rolf Heide became self-employed in 1959. Initially, he worked as a freelance contributor for magazines such as Brigitte, Schöner Wohnen, or Architektur & Wohnen. Together with the Brigitte editorial team, he developed the idea of selling dismantlable designer furniture by mail order. This demand was perfectly realized with the introduction of the STACK BED in 1966. Rolf Heide skillfully tapped into the spirit of the times. Even then, living space was scarce and expensive. The STACK BED, which could be stacked easily and space-efficiently and used as an additional guest bed when needed, provided designer Rolf Heide's iconic design with the perfect solution. A mobile piece of furniture that effortlessly transforms from a double bed into a non-slip sofa or an extra guest bed. And back again. In short, a design that today, as it did then, demonstrates how wonderful living can be even in the tightest of spaces!

Unique design

The high functionality of the STAPELLIEGE is accompanied by its light, minimalist design. Very importantly, timeless design is not just fashionable, but is characterised above all by sustainability and durability. And this applies to both the construction and the design, which should always remain recognisable and unique, even in different environments and over decades.

Lifelong durability

The STAPELLIEGE is not only a prime example of design in the sense of form follows function, but also impresses with its high level of robustness. The basis for this is high-quality materials such as layer-glued multiplex wood, which consists of several layers of wood that are glued together under high pressure and heat. The result is a permanently stable bed that can easily withstand several moves.

"Flexibility played a significant role [...]. Accordingly, I wanted to design a simple, practical piece of furniture that corresponded to the desires of the generation at that time. And it should have a form that you don't forget, that is plausible." Rolf Heide, in an interview in 2016
