Three questions for Studio Suro

What should a shelf look like that is timeless and durable, can be assembled without tools and can be easily expanded with additional shelves? The two young designers Enzo Sundermann and Wladimir Rommel from Münster came up with the PAL system.

The PAL shelf is the perfect all-rounder for anyone who values an aesthetically minimalist and durable design and wants something unique at the same time.

Available in three different widths (600, 900 and 1200 mm), PAL can be expanded or reduced at any time by adding or removing shelves. The individual shelves are 330 mm high, so even larger books and folders can be stored.

A particularly smart feature is that the metal brackets can be used vertically and horizontally and can be positioned anywhere on the shelf. For example, you can use them as a shelf for bottles or as a bookend.

Enzo, Wladmimir, tell us a little about PAL. What makes this piece of furniture so special?

Enzo, Wladmimir: Our intention was to design a piece of furniture that could meet the needs of many people and at the same time bring joy, whether during assembly, furnishing or simply when using the product. We also wanted to achieve a certain degree of sustainability through high aesthetic and structural durability. We wanted to create a product that grows with you instead of being replaced.

Do you have a particular signature style that characterises your designs?

Enzo, Wladmimir: We love unconventional details, minimalism and storytelling. We usually try to combine these elements in our products.

What does the concept of small living mean to you personally?

Enzo, Wladmimir: First and foremost, the concept means reducing things to the essentials. Getting rid of excess and superfluous items and concentrating on what is really necessary.

In concrete terms, for living space it also means that you have to use the limited space available cleverly. This depends on how you divide up your space (floor plan), but also on what you fill it with. Well-designed furniture can be a great help here. Clever furniture can even give you more options for dividing up the space. In addition to functionality, it is particularly important in small living to have robust and durable furniture, as it is usually subject to greater wear and tear (because there is less furniture). If all these requirements are met and the look is right, then small living can be a lot of fun.
