The table PLATO. Minimalism at its best.

In conversation with three young designers: Alissa Arends, Yelim Kim and Leon Bucher

Alissa Arends, Yelim Kim, and Leon Bucher studied Product Design together at the Bauhaus University in Weimar from 2016 to 2021.
At IMM Cologne in 2018, their project—the foldable table PLATO (formerly known as FOLDIT)—was awarded second prize in the Pure Talents Contest. The project was also selected and exhibited as part of the anniversary exhibition Bauhaus Studio 100.

How did the idea for PLATO come about?
PLATO originated from a university project in which we were tasked with designing a workspace specifically for students. Our concept was a practical, agile table that could accompany its users throughout their entire course of study. It quickly became apparent to us that PLATO’s functionality could also be applied to many other contexts.

What, in your opinion, makes PLATO unique?
The design is deliberately understated, yet the table offers maximum flexibility. This is precisely why, from our point of view, PLATO functions so effectively in a wide range of environments. The combination of aesthetics and functionality enables the table to be used in a variety of ways, both in residential and professional spaces.

How did you come into contact with Müller Small Living?
We connected with Müller at the International Furniture Fair in Cologne. What particularly appealed to us about the company were its values, its clear vision for the future, and its in-house production facilities. Moreover, we felt that PLATO was a strong fit with Müller’s existing product range.

What defines good design for you, and what is your design philosophy?
For us, good design is characterised by a high degree of functionality, coherent material usage, and a clear product language. We also believe it is important that users can derive long-lasting satisfaction from a product thanks to its high-quality craftsmanship and timeless form.

How did the three of you come together?
We formed a team at the very beginning of our studies at the Bauhaus University in Weimar and have enjoyed working together ever since. Our collaboration is very harmonious, as we complement one another well and are able to reach agreement on key decisions quickly.

Are there any plans for the future?
Yes, we all agree that we would like to continue working on projects together, and we are already exploring ideas for further products.
